A Message of Greeting

Founding Message

Upon the Establishment of the Eight-University Engineering Association The first Faculty of Engineering in Japan was established in 1873. Since then, the engineering discipline has been carrying out various missions, which have been changing with time, including the adoption of western technologies and civilization, boosting domestic technological development, promoting rapid economic growth, advancement in engineering science, and so forth. In the meantime, Hokkaido University, Tohoku University, The University of Tokyo, Tokyo Institute of Technology, Nagoya University, Kyoto University, Osaka University, and Kyushu University were expected to play a primal role in promoting engineering education and research. The Deans of the Schools of Engineering from these universities have been holding meetings to share information, topics, and problems relating to engineering education and research for more than 60 years now. In recent years, engineering education and research have been facing great changes, which include a reform of the higher education systems and the incorporation of national universities. Under these circumstances, a lot of issues are accumulating one after another. Issues are involving redefining our missions, and innovating engineering education in general and doctoral education in particular to foster high-level doctoral graduates, and to produce global leaders. In order to comprehensively address these issues during a time of change, the 9 Faculties of Engineering and 25 Graduate Schools of Engineering belonging to the eight universities set up a regular meeting in 2012, to make advancement in engineering education and research by sharing information and topics. Based on this meeting, we established the incorporated “Eight-University Engineering Association” in March, 2015. It is our will to make efforts together to solve a variety of issues and to contribute to further progress of the global society through engineering education, research, and technology development. We thank everyone for their cooperation, their guidance, and their encouragement. April 2015 President, Eight-University Engineering Association
